193 Walking and standing,
sitting and lying down,
extending and contracting the limbs:
these are the movements of the body.

194 Linked together by bones and sinews,
plastered over with flesh and hide,
and covered by the skin,
the body is not seen as it is.

195 It’s full of guts and belly,
liver and bladder,
heart and lungs,
kidney and spleen,

196 spit and snot,
sweat and fat,
blood and synovial fluid,
bile and grease.

197 Then in nine streams
the filth is always flowing.
There is muck from the eyes,
wax from the ears,

198 and snot from the nostrils.
The mouth sometimes vomits
bile and sometimes phlegm.
And from the body, sweat and waste.

199 Then there is the hollow head
all filled with brains.
Governed by ignorance,
the fool thinks it’s lovely.

200 And when it lies dead,
bloated and livid,
discarded in a charnel ground,
the relatives forget it.

201 It’s devoured by dogs,
by jackals, wolves, and worms.
It’s devoured by crows and vultures,
and any other creatures there.

202 A wise mendicant here,
having heard the Buddha’s words,
fully understands it,
for they see it as it is.

203 “As this is, so is that,
as that is, so is this.”
They’d reject desire for the body
inside and out.

204 That wise mendicant here
rid of desire and lust,
has found the deathless peace,
extinguishment, the imperishable state.

205 This two-legged body is dirty and stinking,
full of different carcasses,
and oozing all over the place—
but still it is cherished!

206 And if, on account of such a body,
someone prides themselves
or looks down on others—
what is that but a failure to see?

193Caraṁ vā yadi vā tiṭṭhaṁ,
nisinno uda vā sayaṁ;
Samiñjeti pasāreti,
esā kāyassa iñjanā.

194 Aṭṭhinahārusaṁyutto,
tacamaṁsāvalepano;
Chaviyā kāyo paṭicchanno,
yathābhūtaṁ na dissati.

195 Antapūro udarapūro,
yakanapeḷassa vatthino;
Hadayassa papphāsassa,
vakkassa pihakassa ca.

196 Siṅghāṇikāya kheḷassa,
sedassa ca medassa ca;
Lohitassa lasikāya,
pittassa ca vasāya ca.

197 Athassa navahi sotehi,
asucī savati sabbadā;
Akkhimhā akkhigūthako,
kaṇṇamhā kaṇṇagūthako.

198 Siṅghāṇikā ca nāsato,
mukhena vamatekadā;
Pittaṁ semhañca vamati,
kāyamhā sedajallikā.

199 Athassa susiraṁ sīsaṁ,
matthaluṅgassa pūritaṁ;
Subhato naṁ maññati bālo,
avijjāya purakkhato.

200 Yadā ca so mato seti,
Uddhumāto vinīlako;
Apaviddho susānasmiṁ,
Anapekkhā honti ñātayo.

201 Khādanti naṁ suvānā ca,
siṅgālā ca vakā kimī;
Kākā gijjhā ca khādanti,
ye caññe santi pāṇino.

202 Sutvāna buddhavacanaṁ,
Bhikkhu paññāṇavā idha;
So kho naṁ parijānāti,
Yathābhūtañhi passati.

203 Yathā idaṁ tathā etaṁ,
Yathā etaṁ tathā idaṁ;
Ajjhattañca bahiddhā ca,
Kāye chandaṁ virājaye.

204 Chandarāgaviratto so,
Bhikkhu paññāṇavā idha;
Ajjhagā amataṁ santiṁ,
Nibbānaṁ padamaccutaṁ.

205 Dvipādakoyaṁ asuci,
Duggandho parihīrati;
Nānākuṇapaparipūro,
Vissavanto tato tato.

206 Etādisena kāyena,
Yo maññe uṇṇametave;
Paraṁ vā avajāneyya,
Kimaññatra adassanāti.
