XIV. Floods — SN45.179: Lower Fetters

1“Mendicants, there are five lower fetters. What five? Identity view, doubt, misapprehension of precepts and observances, sensual desire, and ill will. These are the five lower fetters.

The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five lowers fetters.”

1"Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, orambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. Katamāni pañca? Sakkāyadiṭṭhi, vicikicchā, sīlabbataparāmāso, kāmacchando, byāpādo – imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañcorambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ orambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya … pe … ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo"ti.
