1At Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Radha said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, it is said, ‘subject to Māra, subject to Māra.’[n.248] Māradhamma. Spk glosses with maraṇadhamma, "subject to death." In some of the suttas that follow (namely, in relation to impermanence, suffering, and nonself), I translate the suffix -dhamma as "nature" rather than "subject to." What now, venerable sir, is subject to Māra?"

"Form, Radha, is subject to Māra.
Feeling is subject to Māra.
Perception is subject to Māra.
Volitional formations are subject to Māra.
Consciousness is subject to Māra.

"Seeing thus, the instructed noble disciple experiences revulsion towards form, revulsion towards feeling, revulsion towards perception, revulsion towards volitional formations, revulsion towards consciousness.

Experiencing revulsion, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion his mind is liberated. When it is liberated there comes the knowledge: ‘It's liberated.’ He understands: ‘Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being.’"

1Sāvatthinidānaṁ. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā rādho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: "‘māradhammo, māradhammo’ti, bhante, vuccati. Katamo nu kho, bhante, māradhammo"ti?

"Rūpaṁ kho, rādha, māradhammo, vedanā māradhammo, saññā māradhammo, saṅkhārā māradhammo, viññāṇaṁ māradhammo.

Evaṁ passaṁ … pe … nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānātī"ti.
