I. A Reed — SN1.6: Awake

1At Sāvatthī.

Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

2“How many sleep while others wake?
How many wake among the sleeping?
By how many do you gather dust?
By how many are you cleansed?”

3“Five sleep while others wake.
Five wake among the sleeping.
By five you gather dust.
By five you’re cleansed.”

1Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: 

2"Kati jāgarataṁ suttā,
kati suttesu jāgarā;
Katibhi rajamādeti,
katibhi parisujjhatī"ti.

3"Pañca jāgarataṁ suttā,
pañca suttesu jāgarā;
Pañcabhi rajamādeti,
pañcabhi parisujjhatī"ti.
