I. A Reed — SN1.5: Cut How Many?

1At Sāvatthī.

Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

2“Cut how many? Drop how many?
How many more should be developed?
How many kinds of clinging must a mendicant get over
before you call them a flood-crosser?”

3“Five to cut, five to drop,
and five more to develop.
A mendicant must get over five kinds of clinging
before you call them a flood-crosser.”

1Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: 

2"Kati chinde kati jahe,
kati cuttari bhāvaye;
Kati saṅgātigo bhikkhu,
oghatiṇṇoti vuccatī"ti.

3"Pañca chinde pañca jahe,
pañca cuttari bhāvaye;
Pañca saṅgātigo bhikkhu,
oghatiṇṇoti vuccatī"ti.
