III. A Sword — SN1.29: Four Wheels

1“Four are its wheels, and nine its doors;
it’s fettered, filled with greed,
and born from a bog.
Great hero, how am I supposed to live like this?”

2“Having cut the strap and harness—
the wicked desire and greed—
and having plucked out craving, root and all:
that’s how you’re supposed to live like this.”

1"Catucakkaṁ navadvāraṁ,
puṇṇaṁ lobhena saṁyutaṁ;
Paṅkajātaṁ mahāvīra,
kathaṁ yātrā bhavissatī"ti.

2"Chetvā naddhiṁ varattañca,
icchā lobhañca pāpakaṁ;
Samūlaṁ taṇhamabbuyha,
evaṁ yātrā bhavissatī"ti.
