Aṅguttara Nikāya - The Numerical Discourses

4: The Book of the Fours

II. Walking — AN 4.19: Prejudice (3rd)

1“Mendicants, there are these four ways of making prejudiced decisions. What four? Making decisions prejudiced by favoritism, hostility, stupidity, and cowardice. These are the four ways of making prejudiced decisions.

2There are these four ways of making unprejudiced decisions. What four? Making decisions unprejudiced by favoritism, hostility, stupidity, and cowardice. These are the four ways of making unprejudiced decisions.

3If you act against the teaching
out of favoritism, hostility, cowardice, or stupidity,
your fame fades away,
like the moon in the waning fortnight.

4If you don’t act against the teaching
out of favoritism, hostility, cowardice, and stupidity,
your fame swells,
like the moon in the waxing fortnight.”

1"Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, agatigamanāni. Katamāni cattāri? Chandāgatiṁ gacchati, dosāgatiṁ gacchati, mohāgatiṁ gacchati, bhayāgatiṁ gacchati – imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri agatigamanāni.

2Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, nāgatigamanāni. Katamāni cattāri? Na chandāgatiṁ gacchati, na dosāgatiṁ gacchati, na mohāgatiṁ gacchati, na bhayāgatiṁ gacchati – imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri nāgatigamanānīti.

3Chandā dosā bhayā mohā,
yo dhammaṁ ativattati;
Nihīyati tassa yaso,
kāḷapakkheva candimā.

4Chandā dosā bhayā mohā,
yo dhammaṁ nātivattati;
Āpūrati tassa yaso,
sukkapakkheva candimā"ti.

Navamaṁ.
