47. Satipaṭṭhānasaṁyutta: On Mindfulness Meditation

V. The Deathless — SN47.49: Feelings

1“Mendicants, there are these three feelings. What three? Pleasant, painful, and neutral feeling. These are the three feelings. The four kinds of mindfulness meditation should be developed to completely understand these three feelings.

2What four? It’s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body — keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world. They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … mind … principles — keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.

These four kinds of mindfulness meditation should be developed to completely understand these three feelings.”

1"Tisso imā, bhikkhave, vedanā. Katamā tisso? Sukhā vedanā, dukkhā vedanā, adukkhamasukhā vedanā – imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso vedanā. Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ vedanānaṁ pariññāya cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā.

2Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī vihārati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu … pe … citte … pe … dhammesu dhammānupassī vihārati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ.

Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ vedanānaṁ pariññāya ime cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvetabbā"ti.
