IX. With Channa — SN35.86: A Teaching In Brief

1Seated to one side, Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha:

“Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”

2“What do you think, Ānanda? Is the eye permanent or impermanent?”

3“Impermanent, sir.”

4“But if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?”


5“Suffering, sir.”

6“But if it’s impermanent, suffering, and liable to fall apart, is it fit to be regarded thus: ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?”


7“No, sir.”


8-9“Are sights … eye consciousness … eye contact …


10The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact: is that permanent or impermanent?”

11“Impermanent, sir.”


12“But if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?”

13“Suffering, sir.”


14“But if it’s impermanent, suffering, and liable to fall apart, is it fit to be regarded thus: ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?”

15“No, sir.” …


16-17“Is the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind …


18The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact: is that permanent or impermanent?”


19“Impermanent, sir.”

20“But if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?”

21“Suffering, sir.”

22“But if it’s impermanent, suffering, and liable to fall apart, is it fit to be regarded thus: ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?”

23“No, sir.”


24“Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact. And they grow disillusioned with the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact. They grow disillusioned with the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind … painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.

They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’”

1Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: "sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto vihareyyan"ti.

2"Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, Ānanda, cakkhu niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā"ti?

3"Aniccaṁ, bhante".

4"Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vā"ti?


5"Dukkhaṁ, bhante".

6"Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, kallaṁ nu taṁ samanupassituṁ: ‘etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attā’"ti?


7"No hetaṁ, bhante".


8"Rūpā niccā vā aniccā vā"ti?

9"Aniccā, bhante" … pe … .


10"Cakkhuviññāṇaṁ … pe … yampidaṁ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā"ti?

11"Aniccaṁ, bhante".


12"Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vā"ti?

13"Dukkhaṁ, bhante".


14"Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, kallaṁ nu taṁ samanupassituṁ: ‘etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attā’"ti?

16"Jivhā niccā vā aniccā vā"ti?

17"Aniccā, bhante" … pe … .


18"Jivhāviññāṇaṁ … jivhāsamphasso … pe … yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vā"ti?


19"Aniccaṁ, bhante".

20"Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vā taṁ sukhaṁ vā"ti?

21"Dukkhaṁ, bhante".

22"Yaṁ panāniccaṁ dukkhaṁ vipariṇāmadhammaṁ, kallaṁ nu taṁ samanupassituṁ: ‘etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attā’"ti?

23"No hetaṁ, bhante".


24"Evaṁ passaṁ, Ānanda, sutavā ariyasāvako cakkhusmimpi nibbindati … pe … cakkhusamphassepi nibbindati … pe … yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tasmimpi nibbindati. Nibbindaṁ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati; vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti.

‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānātī"ti.
