VIII. Incinerated — SN1.78: Desire

1“What should one who desires the good not give away?
What should a mortal not reject?
What should be let out when it’s good,
but not when it’s bad?”

2“A man shouldn’t give away himself.
He shouldn’t reject himself.
Speech should be let out when it’s good,
but not when it’s bad.”

1"Kimatthakāmo na dade,
kiṁ macco na pariccaje;
Kiṁsu muñceyya kalyāṇaṁ,
pāpikaṁ na ca mocaye"ti.

2"Attānaṁ na dade poso,
attānaṁ na pariccaje;
Vācaṁ muñceyya kalyāṇaṁ,
pāpikañca na mocaye"ti.
