180–229

(180-184) “There are these two things. What two? Anger and hostility … disdain and contempt … jealousy and stinginess … deceit and deviousness … lack of conscience and prudence. These are the two things.”

(185-189)“There are these two things. What two? Freedom from anger and hostility … freedom from disdain and contempt … freedom from jealousy and stinginess … freedom from deceit and deviousness … conscience and prudence. These are the two things.”

(190-194)“Anyone who has two things lives in suffering. What two? Anger and hostility … disdain and contempt … jealousy and stinginess … deceit and deviousness … lack of conscience and prudence. Anyone who has these two things lives in suffering.”

(195-199)“Anyone who has these two things lives happily. What two? Freedom from anger and hostility … freedom from disdain and contempt … freedom from jealousy and stinginess … freedom from deceit and deviousness … conscience and prudence. Anyone who has these two things lives happily.”

(205-209)“These two things don’t lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee. What two? These two things don’t lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee.”

(210-214)“Anyone who has two things is cast down to hell. What two? Anger and hostility … disdain and contempt … jealousy and stinginess … deceit and deviousness … lack of conscience and prudence. Anyone who has these two things is cast down to hell.”

(215-219)“Anyone who has two things is raised up to heaven. What two? Freedom from anger and hostility … freedom from disdain and contempt … freedom from jealousy and stinginess … freedom from deceit and deviousness … conscience and prudence. Anyone who has these two things is raised up to heaven.”

(220-224)“When they have two things, some people, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. What two? Anger and hostility … disdain and contempt … jealousy and stinginess … deceit and deviousness … lack of conscience and prudence. When they have two things, some people, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

(225-229)“When they have two things, some people—when their body breaks up, after death—are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm. What two? Freedom from anger and hostility … freedom from disdain and contempt … freedom from jealousy and stinginess … freedom from deceit and deviousness … conscience and prudence. When they have these two things, some people—when their body breaks up, after death—are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

(180-184) “Dveme, bhikkhave, dhammā. Katame dve? Kodho ca upanāho ca … makkho ca paḷāso ca … issā ca macchariyañca … māyā ca sāṭheyyañca … ahirikañca anottappañca. Variant: paḷāso → palāso (bj, mr) Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā”.

(185-189) “Dveme, bhikkhave, dhammā. Katame dve? Akkodho ca anupanāho ca … amakkho ca apaḷāso ca … anissā ca amacchariyañca … amāyā ca asāṭheyyañca … hirī ca ottappañca. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā”.

(190-194) “Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato dukkhaṁ viharati. Katamehi dvīhi? Kodhena ca upanāhena ca … makkhena ca paḷāsena ca … issāya ca macchariyena ca … māyāya ca sāṭheyyena ca … ahirikena ca anottappena ca. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato dukkhaṁ viharati”.

(195-199) “Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato sukhaṁ viharati. Katamehi dvīhi? Akkodhena ca anupanāhena ca … amakkhena ca apaḷāsena ca … anissāya ca amacchariyena ca … amāyāya ca asāṭheyyena ca … hiriyā ca ottappena ca. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato sukhaṁ viharati”.

(200-204) “Dveme, bhikkhave, dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno parihānāya saṁvattanti. Katame dve? Kodho ca upanāho ca … makkho ca paḷāso ca … issā ca macchariyañca … māyā ca sāṭheyyañca … ahirikañca anottappañca. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno parihānāya saṁvattanti”.

(205-209) “Dveme, bhikkhave, dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattanti. Katame dve? Akkodho ca anupanāho ca … amakkho ca apaḷāso ca … anissā ca amacchariyañca … amāyā ca asāṭheyyañca … hirī ca ottappañca. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattanti”.

(210-214) “Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye. Katamehi dvīhi? Kodhena ca upanāhena ca … makkhena ca paḷāsena ca … issāya ca macchariyena ca … māyāya ca sāṭheyyena ca … ahirikena ca anottappena ca. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye”.

(215-219) “Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge. Katamehi dvīhi? Akkodhena ca anupanāhena ca … amakkhena ca apaḷāsena ca … anissāya ca amacchariyena ca … amāyāya ca asāṭheyyena ca … hiriyā ca ottappena ca. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge”.

(220-224) “Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato idhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati. Katamehi dvīhi? Kodhena ca upanāhena ca … makkhena ca paḷāsena ca … issāya ca macchariyena ca … māyāya ca sāṭheyyena ca … ahirikena ca anottappena ca. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato idhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati”.

(225-229) “Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato idhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati. Katamehi dvīhi? Akkodhena ca anupanāhena ca … amakkhena ca apaḷāsena ca … anissāya ca amacchariyena ca … amāyāya ca asāṭheyyena ca … hiriyā ca ottappena ca. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato idhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati”.
